July’s birthstone and one of the rarest and most precious of all gemstones, the ruby is made of the mineral corundum. Referred to in the Bible and in ancient Sanskrit writings as the most precious of all stones, the finest quality ruby is indeed, rarer and more valuable than even the top quality white diamonds. Unlike white diamonds, large rubies are exceedingly difficult to find; it is rare to see a ruby of more than 5 carats.
Associated with the heart and all its desires, a ruby is believed to preserve physical and mental health, promote a cheerful disposition, and give courage to its wearer. But more than anything else, a ruby symbolizes romance and passion; it is the anniversary gem for the 15th and 40th years of marriage.
Rubies are found in many parts of the world, including Thailand, East Africa, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam but the most valuable and the rarest are found in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.
