Like all rare and precious gems, sapphires have long been the source of legend and myth. Ancient Persians believed the sky was made of sapphire and some speculate that the Ten Commandments were engraved on sapphire tablets. Throughout its history the sapphire has been considered a regal gem, worn by members of Royalty for protection and its healing powers.

Today the major sources of sapphires are in Australia, Thailand, Myanmar and East Africa and many of the most valuable sapphires came from mines in Kashmir.

One of the largest sapphires in history was in the possession of Catherine the Great. This magnificent 337 carat, deep blue stone was owned for a time by Harry Winston, who displayed it in his Court of Jewels traveling exhibition during the late 1940’s and early 1950’s.

The Sapphire, which is September’s birthstone, symbolizes love and fidelity and is believed to be powerful enough to heal ailments as diverse as ulcers, eye trouble and nosebleeds.
